The International Society of Developmental Biologists (ISDB) was founded in 1968 from the International Institute of Embryology, now Hubrecht Laboratories, in the Netherlands and is a non-profit scientific association which has as its key aim the promotion of the study of Developmental Biology through support of scientific meetings, workshops, students and publications worldwide.

It involves the study of mechanisms of development, differentiation, and growth in animals and plants at the molecular, cellular, genetic and evolutionary levels. Vertebrate (mouse, chick, frog, fish) and invertebrate (fly, worm) models are covered. Specific topics include formation of early body plan, cell type determination, organogenesis, morphogenesis, stem cells, cloning, and issues in human development. The life science discipline Developmental Biology (DB) aims to understand the processes that lead from the fertilisation of an egg cell (or equivalent) to the formation of a well-structured and functional multicellular organism (Fig.1). At first sight, this may appear a mere curiosity-driven academic goal, not necessarily worth taxpayers’ money.

Developmental Biology The development of the vertebrate nervous system is the common interest of all the groups in the section. Multiple aspects of embryonic brain development are covered, from the early phases of patterning to the late events of regeneration, through the delicate balance of growth and differentiation, the acquisition of cell identities and the wiring of circuits. The main objective of this advanced course is to introduce students to the latest advances within the field of stem cells in the context of developmental biology towards embryology and regenerative medicine. This course also emphasises the importance of sex and gender aspects in biomedical research. Master of Science in Developmental Biology.
